Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Both clubs find themselves in the relegation zone, but they each secured victories in their latest matches. In fact, Portsmouth tasted victory for the first time this season. Who will start a winning streak?
Cardiff City
Cardiff City already boast an unbeaten run. Beyond an unexpectedly large victory over Plymouth Argyle (5:0) in the 10th round, they also drew with Bristol City (1:1), having started with a win over Millwall (1:0). It’s evident they've been conceding less, and the negative difference between actual and potential goals has been narrowing: they’ve conceded just one goal against the 2.73 xGA.
Portsmouth
Portsmouth have put together a mini-series of two matches as well. Initially, they didn’t lose to Oxford United (1:1) at home, and in the latest round, they achieved a come-from-behind win over Queens Park Rangers (2:1), moving ahead of them in the process. Before that, they had conceded six goals from Stoke City, which was largely circumstantial, as they had held much stronger Sheffield United to a goalless draw. While the newcomers do not create many dangerous chances (19.17 xGA over 10 matches), the goals conceded are not significantly over the expected (21).
Cardiff City vs Portsmouth Prediction
The hosts are unlikely to replicate the rout against Plymouth Argyle. Portsmouth have made significant improvements over the past month, losing by more than one goal away only once in five games. It’s uncertain whether the visitors will even lose. It’s easier to believe that there will be few goals.
