Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
Chelsea lost to a direct rival for a Champions League spot, Aston Villa (1:2), last weekend. They now have a prime opportunity to secure three relatively easy points. Southampton are currently struggling, and even 19th place seems out of reach.
Chelsea
Following the previous round of matches, Chelsea dropped to seventh in the table. However, there’s little reason for concern, as Manchester City, currently fourth and occupying the final Champions League spot, are just one point ahead. Victory against Tottenham Hotspur isn’t guaranteed, but Chelsea, even with their squad issues, should overcome Southampton, a side demonstrably below Premier League standard in terms of overall quality.
Southampton
Southampton’s recent performance at home to Brighton (0:4) highlighted this disparity. Consider the statistics: 18 shots from the visitors, 12 on target, 10 goal-scoring opportunities, and 3.97 xGA, plus a shot that hit the woodwork. Despite conceding four goals, Southampton’s goalkeeper made eight saves. This defeat was preceded by losses to Bournemouth (1:3) and Championship side Burnley (0:1) in the FA Cup.
Chelsea vs Southampton Prediction
Chelsea will certainly create chances, as they did against Aston Villa in the previous match (2.30 xG). Last time a world-class goalkeeper stood in Chelsea’s way, but Southampton only have Aaron Ramsdale, and you can’t expect him to pull off miracles every game. The home side at Stamford Bridge will win comfortably, as they have already thrashed Southampton (5:1) in the first leg.
