Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Nations League match.
China will begin their home leg of the Nations League with a clash against a long-time rival — Japan. On paper, the hosts are among the tournament's underdogs, currently sitting 24th in the world rankings. However, home advantage could give the Chinese squad a chance to upset the odds.
China
After being relegated from the Nations League last year, the main focus for China has been to rebuild and push for at least a playoff spot. The current squad features a number of genuinely talented players. Zhang Jingyin from Belogorie Belgorod, who impressed in this season’s Super League, alongside opposite hitter Chen Longhai, are capable of testing even the most solid defensive setups.
Japan
Following a second-place finish in last year’s Nations League, Japan endured a disappointing Olympic campaign. They narrowly advanced from their group after two losses and were then eliminated in the quarter-finals by Italy, falling 2:3. With a lengthy break since their last major competition, it's unclear what shape they’re in, and they may not be at full strength in the early stages of the tournament.
China vs Japan Prediction
Although Japan are the stronger side on paper, their last three meetings with China have been anything but straightforward. One went to a tie-break, while the other two ended in defeats. With the home crowd behind them, the Chinese squad will be highly motivated to deliver a strong performance in this key fixture.
