Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
After their impressive Champions League triumph over Atalanta (5:2 on aggregate), Club Brugge have hit a rough patch domestically. The Belgian champions are not in their best shape heading into this clash with Aston Villa, and it’s unlikely they can replicate the shock 1:0 victory they managed in November’s meeting with the English side.
Club Brugge
Against Atalanta in the previous round, Club Brugge conceded a staggering 4.32 xGA over 180 minutes, with the Italians simply failing to capitalise on their chances. Their defensive issues continued in recent league fixtures, losing to Standard Liège (1:2) and drawing with Gent (1:1), allowing a combined 3.87 xGA. These struggles have left them trailing league leaders Genk by nine points. Adding to their problems, midfielder Raphael Onyedika is unavailable, which makes it easier for opponents to neutralise key attacking threats such as Christos Tzolis, Ferran Jutglà, and Chadi Riad.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League last 16 directly from the main group stage, maintaining a top-eight position throughout. New signings Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford have seamlessly integrated into the squad, contributing seven goal involvements between them since mid-February. On Friday, Aston Villa rested key players against Cardiff City in the FA Cup (2:0), yet still dominated the match (3.42–0.25 in xG), showing their squad depth.
Club Brugge vs Aston Villa Prediction
In their last Champions League encounter at Jan Breydel Stadium, Club Brugge secured a narrow 1:0 win courtesy of a Hans Vanaken penalty. However, Aston Villa only managed a single shot on target that night, largely due to underestimating their opponents. This time, they will be fully prepared and eager to return to Birmingham with an advantage.
