Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
Club Brugge scraped through to the Champions League knockout stage with four points fewer than Atalanta. Meanwhile, Atalanta spent most of the campaign in the top half, only missing out on a top-8 finish after tight matches against Real Madrid (2:3) and Barcelona (2:2).
Club Brugge
Brugge secured seven points from four home games in the Champions League but scored just three goals in those fixtures. Their defeat to Borussia Dortmund (0:3) exposed defensive frailties, particularly against fast wing attacks (2.01 xGA and 17 shots conceded). Domestically, a win over OH Leuven (1:0) ended a five-match winless streak, but they are far from their best form heading into this clash.
Atalanta
Atalanta dropped out of the Coppa Italia due to their packed schedule but warmed up in style with a 5:0 thrashing of Hellas Verona on Saturday. Mateo
Retegui netted four goals in that match, further solidifying his position as Serie A’s top scorer (20+3). Even with Ademola Lookman injured, Gian Gasperini has plenty of firepower – Gianluca Scamacca has returned, while new signing Daniel Maldini could get his first opportunity.
Club Brugge vs Atalanta Prediction
Atalanta look superior in quality and attacking options, so we see value in backing them cautiously.
