Adam Williams presents his prediction for the NHL match.
The Columbus Blue Jackets still have games in hand compared to the eighth-placed New York Rangers, making every point crucial in their playoff chase. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils are unlikely to move from their third-place position in the Metropolitan Division.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Just a week ago, the Blue Jackets sat seventh in the East. However, a three-game losing streak from 12 to 16 March has dropped them to 10th. This run included a 3:5 defeat against the New Jersey Devils, followed by back-to-back shutouts at home against the Vegas Golden Knights (0:4) and the New York Rangers (0:4). Their struggles stem from top defenceman Zach Werenski (69 points) and leading scorer Kirill Marchenko (25+37), who have failed to register points in three of the last five games. It’s unlikely this slump lasts much longer.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils have been wildly inconsistent. Wins over the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Edmonton Oilers (3:2) have been followed by heavy losses to the Winnipeg Jets (1:6) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (3:7). Goaltending has been a major concern—Jacob Markström has posted a save percentage above 90% in just one of his last five starts. Veteran backup Jake Allen has slightly better numbers, but with minimal game time since 8 February. Markström is expected to start, which doesn't inspire much confidence in a defensive battle.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs New Jersey Devils Prediction
The Columbus Blue Jackets will likely turn to Daniil Tarasov in goal as Elvis Merzļikins deals with a minor injury. Tarasov’s numbers are far from reliable, with a 3.51 GAA and an .882 save percentage this season. With shaky goaltending on both sides and high-powered offences—the Blue Jackets rank eighth in goals per game (3.23), while the Devils sit 13th (2.99)—this one has all the makings of a high-scoring affair.
