Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Coventry City's resurgence in the second half of the season has pushed the team into the race for a play-off position. After defeats against two of the league’s top sides, a home fixture against Portsmouth looks far less daunting — this is a match where points are there to be earned.
Coventry City
The attacking form of Coventry City has produced six wins since 11 February — in five of those matches, the team scored more than 1.5 goals. Even in losses to Sheffield United (1:3) and Burnley (1:2), the side remained aggressive going forward, generating a combined xG of 2.67 across both games. Haji Wright is in excellent form, having netted four times in the last three fixtures, including a hat-trick in a 3:0 victory over top-four contenders Sunderland.
Portsmouth
In their return season to the English Football League Championship, Portsmouth have managed to steer clear of the relegation battle. However, the squad continues to show major defensive frailties. Conceding six goals in 1:2 defeats to Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End, and Millwall highlights a consistent vulnerability at the back. Away from home, the team has allowed 45 goals — the worst defensive record in the Championship.
Coventry City vs Portsmouth Prediction
On Wednesday, Coventry City are expected to capitalise against a Portsmouth side with little left to play for and look to re-enter the top six. The focus is on goals from the home side, who remain committed to an attacking style of play.
