Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Both clubs kept clean sheets in their previous round, but for Sheffield Wednesday, that wasn't enough for a win due to a lacklustre attack, which isn't the case with their upcoming opponents. Coventry City's defence was also outstanding. Are we expecting a clean win for the home side?
Coventry City
Coventry City have been consistently dominant throughout the past week. Having rightfully missed out on a win against Leeds United away (0:3), they shut out Blackburn Rovers at home (3:0), who are known for their scoring prowess. Even their defeat in the sixth round against Swansea City (1-2) at the Ricoh Arena doesn't paint the full picture, as they managed 20 (7 on target) shots and an xG of 1.65. They are creating chances – the issue lies in converting them, but that's half the battle.
Sheffield Wednesday
The South Yorkshire side failed to break down the Bristol City defence midweek (0:0). How do you break through when you only have seven shots and just one on target? There's a chance it might go in from one, but the likelihood is notably low. They weren't scored against because their hosts were equally ineffective in attack: 60% possession amounted to just 10 (2 on target) attempts. If they push a bit harder, Sheffield Wednesday are likely to concede. Even a team not particularly known for their attacking strength like Luton Town managed to score twice, creating an xGA of 2.12. Coventry City have had no trouble creating chances in their recent home games, averaging 19 (7.5 on target) shots over two matches.
Coventry City vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction
Additionally, Coventry City have won four of their last five head-to-head encounters, scoring at least two goals in each triumph, with the other match ending in a draw. Coventry City, who are much stronger, appear to have every opportunity to delight their fans once again. Our bet is on them.
