The surprise return of Anthony Davis and a surge of four wins in five games have silenced any talk of the Dallas Mavericks tanking this season in favour of a draft pick. Instead, the Mavericks are pushing for a strong finish — and aiming to beat the Brooklyn Nets for the second time in a week.

They exceeded betting expectations against the spread in five of their last six games, including a dominant 120:101 road win over the Brooklyn Nets. The former Lakers centre hasn’t put up monster numbers, but his presence clearly energises the team. Since that win in New York, the Mavericks have edged out the Orlando Magic in a defensive grind (101:92) and survived a wild shootout with the Chicago Bulls (120:119).

The Nets, on the other hand, continue to sink. Their only bright spot in March was a 115:112 win over the bottom-feeders Washington Wizards — one of just three victories this month, with only the Utah Jazz faring worse. The Nets’ decline traces back to mid-December, when they moved Dennis Schröder and Dorian Finney-Smith. Back then, they ranked 13th in offensive efficiency; since then, they’re dead last, scoring just 106 points per 100 possessions.

The Dallas Mavericks have only gained momentum since their last meeting with the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavericks are hungry to cement their play-in spot and are steadily regaining depth in the frontcourt, with Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin, and Dereck Lively all nearing a return. The Brooklyn Nets were crushed by 19 points on home court and failed to reach 105 points despite a solid 51% shooting night — not something they’ll be replicating on the road. Expect the Mavericks to control this one defensively and deliver another confident win.
