Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Beijing match.
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev impressed in the previous round with a commanding 6:3, 6:3 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, reaching his first quarter-final in five tournaments. His return game has been his biggest weapon in Beijing, and a recent coaching shake-up appears to have given him fresh impetus. However, his serve remains a real concern: across two matches he has failed to save a single break point, with Fokina converting all three chances and Cameron Norrie also breaking at will. The Russian has struggled for consistency on hard courts this year, winning more than two matches at just one of his 12 tournaments, and even suffering a shock loss to world No.157 Yibing Wu.
Alexander Zverev
The German has reached the Beijing quarter-finals for a fifth time, grinding past Corentin Moutet in a three-set battle (7:5, 3:6, 6:3). His serve continues to be the cornerstone of his game, landing 75% of first serves this week. Zverev has won his last four quarter-finals on tour, though Medvedev has historically been a tough opponent. Their rivalry has produced plenty of drama — five of their last eight meetings have gone to three sets, and in only two of those encounters has the match total stayed under 21.5 games.
Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev Prediction
Despite Medvedev’s sharp display against Fokina, his serving woes leave him vulnerable under pressure, and Zverev has the tools to exploit that weakness. Given their head-to-head history, this clash should be another tight, extended battle — but the German looks the safer pick.
