Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Washington match.
Washington has proven to be a significant venue for Daniil Medvedev, who reached the final here in 2019 and is once again mounting a strong campaign for the title. After a testing win over Reilly Opelka, where Daniil Medvedev gradually found his rhythm and asserted his dominance, the Russian now takes on Yibing Wu, who has come through the qualifiers and is riding a four-match winning streak.
Daniil Medvedev
Since the beginning of 2024, Daniil Medvedev has reached the quarter-finals or better in 10 of 14 hard court events on the ATP Tour. This surface remains his most reliable, allowing him to dictate points from the baseline with consistency. His encounter with Reilly Opelka served as a valuable transition after the grass court swing, and from the third set onward, Medvedev was in complete control (3:6, 7:5, 6:1). He also holds a comfortable head-to-head advantage over Yibing Wu, having defeated him in straight sets at the 2022 US Open (6:4, 6:2, 6:2).
Yibing Wu
Yibing Wu has shown solid form, though most of his wins in Washington have come against opponents who were either out of rhythm or physically limited. Gaël Monfils and Alexei Popyrin were far from their best, and despite leading with multiple breaks, Corentin Moutet let the match slip away in a close finish. In Los Cabos, Yibing Wu struggled in the deciding set against Tristan Schoolkate, and in the opening round here, he narrowly avoided defeat to Mitchell Krueger, edging the third set in a tie-break. Crucially, the Chinese has consistently fallen short against top-20 opposition, losing seven of eight such encounters and winning only four sets out of 22 played.
Daniil Medvedev vs Yibing Wu Prediction
There is a clear gap in quality and experience between the two players. Daniil Medvedev is gaining momentum as the tournament unfolds, while Yibing Wu lacks the baseline consistency and tactical depth to challenge him effectively. Daniil is expected to win this match with relative ease.
