Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Indian Wells Masters match.
Carlos Alcaraz continues his dominant run at this tournament and, with several top seeds already eliminated, has become the clear favourite for the title. Shapovalov is working his way back to form after a long slump, but his latest performances suggest he is still far from his best.
Denis Shapovalov
Shapovalov has made progress in recent months, overcoming psychological struggles to claim titles in Belgrade last November and Dallas in February. However, he has consistently struggled against elite opposition, losing 25 of 27 career matches against top-five players. His opening-round victory over Adam Walton did little to inspire confidence, as he registered 26 unforced errors, outnumbering his 17 winners.
Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz has been untouchable in Indian Wells over the past three years, winning 17 of his 19 matches at this event since 2021. The Spaniard made a strong start to his title defence, comfortably dispatching Quentin Halys (6:4, 6:2), allowing just one break-point opportunity and winning an astonishing 95% of points on his first serve. Their head-to-head history also heavily favours Alcaraz, who dismantled Shapovalov at Roland Garros 2023 with a ruthless 6:1, 6:4, 6:2 victory.
Denis Shapovalov vs Carlos Alcaraz Prediction
With a superior all-round game and an impeccable record in Indian Wells, Alcaraz should cruise through this encounter. Shapovalov lacks the consistency to trouble top-tier players, making a comfortable win for the Spaniard the most likely outcome.
