Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Irish Premier Division match.
Derry City and Drogheda United are level on points in the Irish Premier Division standings, currently sitting fourth and third respectively. However, the latter only edge ahead due to having played two more matches. The hosts now have a prime opportunity to leapfrog their rivals with a win, without relying on games in hand.
Derry City
Derry City have kept pace with a demanding fixture schedule that has become more congested throughout June — a trend typical for this time of year. However, heavy rain is predicted in Derry over the coming days, which could influence conditions. Since early May, the team have been involved in a series of low-scoring contests — seven of their last nine games have ended that way.
Drogheda United
The overly defensive tactics of Drogheda United backfired on Monday against Cork City. After Shane Farrell opened the scoring in the 12th minute, the visitors retreated and sat deep. The statistics were telling — 24% possession, 22 shots faced, and 52 clearances against the league’s lowest-ranked opponent. It appears the squad are still burdened by memories of last season’s relegation fight.
Derry City vs Drogheda United Prediction
Derry City have consistently ranked among the league’s strongest sides in recent years and are unlikely to be overawed. In the reverse fixture earlier this season, they suffered a 1:3 home defeat to Drogheda United, a result heavily influenced by Liam Boyce's red card in the 63rd minute — at a time when the team were leading 1:0. Boyce had also opened the scoring in that match. Provided there are no such setbacks this time, we expect Derry City to at least avoid defeat. Additionally, with six of Drogheda United's last eight matches finishing under the mark, a low-scoring outcome looks likely once again.
