Adam Williams presents his prediction for the NHL match.
The New Year has marked a turning point for the Detroit Red Wings, delivering their most productive month of the season. In January, they have clinched nine victories—almost 40% of their total wins this regular season (23). In the early hours of Tuesday, they are set to face the Los Angeles Kings, who are battling for a top-three spot in the Pacific Division.
Detroit Red Wings
For the Red Wings, much of their success can be attributed to the fresh energy brought in by a coaching change. Todd McLellan, who previously served as an assistant under Mike Babcock during the Red Wings’ golden era in the 2000s, has reinvigorated the team. This resurgence has seen them overcome not only Eastern Conference underdogs but also formidable opponents like the Florida Panthers, Winnipeg Jets, and Washington Capitals. In their ongoing home stand, the Michigan side boast two regulation-time victories over the spirited Montreal Canadiens (4:2) and the league’s highest-scoring team, the Tampa Bay Lightning (2:0).
Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings, in contrast, can only aspire to such offensive prowess. Ranked 20th in the league, the Kings average 2.89 goals per game. Notably, their roster includes just one forward with more than 20 goals this season—Adrian Kempe (24+20). The Detroit Red Wings, on the other hand, have two such players, with Lucas Raymond nearly joining the ranks. Anze Kopitar (12+31) hasn’t scored since 30 December, and Phillip Danault (4+19) with Quinton Byfield (10+12) have collectively netted just three goals over the entire month. It’s worth mentioning these are all forwards from their top-six lineup.
Detroit Red Wings vs Los Angeles Kings Prediction
Bookmakers are anticipating a low-scoring affair, meaning the outcome will largely depend on each team's ability to capitalise on limited opportunities. The Detroit Red Wings and the Los Angeles Kings are comparable in terms of shot conversion percentage (both at 10.6%), but there is a significant gap in the effectiveness of their special units. The Red Wings convert 27.7% of their chances into goals compared to a mere 16% by the Kings. Therefore, we are betting on a win for the hosts.
