Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Roland Garros match.
For Diana Shnaider, this is a chance to break new ground by reaching the third round of Roland Garros for the first time. For Dayana Yastremska, it presents an opportunity to avenge her straight-sets defeat on grass last year (2:6, 2:6). Despite Shnaider advancing from the opening round, her performance left several concerns, giving Yastremska legitimate reason to believe she can challenge and potentially come out on top.
Diana Shnaider
In the first round, Shnaider faced qualifier Anastasia Soboleva. Though she claimed a straight-sets win, her showing was far from convincing. She committed 32 unforced errors across two sets and nearly let a 5:0 lead slip away in the opener, allowing Anastasia Soboleva to win six games in a row before regaining control in the tie-break (7:6, 6:2). This season, Shnaider has won 8 out of 12 matches on clay, but her record against elite opponents remains underwhelming, with just two wins from six encounters against top-50 players.
Dayana Yastremska
World No. 48 Dayana Yastremska made a solid start by beating Destanee Aiava (6:4, 6:3). Her aggressive style proved effective, posting a winners-to-errors ratio of +3 (23–20), a respectable mark on this surface. Yastremska has won four of her seven matches on clay this year and has taken at least one set in every completed match, with the exception of her retirement against Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart.
Diana Shnaider vs Dayana Yastremska Prediction
Diana Shnaider remains vulnerable to prolonged dips in concentration and is not currently showing convincing form. Dayana Yastremska, with her powerful and proactive game, has the tools to exploit those weaknesses and at the very least keep the contest close.
