Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Bundesliga match.
Eintracht return to the Champions League after last season’s third-place finish and will be eager to build on that success, while Werder narrowly missed out on European qualification and start the new campaign under a fresh head coach. On paper, Frankfurt look clear favourites, particularly at home.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Last season was historic for Eintracht: they qualified directly for the Champions League via the league for the first time in over 40 years, collecting 60 points — their best haul in that period. In attack, they ranked fourth in the Bundesliga with 68 goals, finishing the campaign strongly with 10 goals in their last four matches. The new season has started in similar fashion, hammering Engers (5:0) in the German Cup. Their unbeaten run now stretches to six competitive games. At home last term, Frankfurt won three of their final four league fixtures, keeping clean sheets in three of them.
Werder Bremen
Werder, meanwhile, finished eighth on 51 points — just one shy of the European places. However, their new era began with disappointment, losing 0:1 to Arminia in the Cup. Their form towards the end of last season was also patchy, drawing three of their final four matches — two of those goalless. While Werder did beat Eintracht at home in the spring, their away record in this fixture is poor: they have failed to win in Frankfurt in six consecutive visits.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Werder Bremen Prediction
Eintracht boast a more settled side and sharper form coming into the opener. Werder, under a new boss, are still searching for balance, with attacking problems plain to see. Factoring in home advantage and Frankfurt’s unbeaten streak, the hosts look strong favourites.
