Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Montreal match.
The final quarter-final clash in Montreal sees Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 13) take on Naomi Osaka (WTA No. 49). On paper, the Ukrainian enters as the clear favourite, but Osaka has already knocked out two top-30 opponents this week.
Elina Svitolina
In the round of 16, Svitolina faced a stern test in Amanda Anisimova (WTA No. 7) and passed with flying colours (6:4, 6:1). She delivered an outstanding attacking performance, winning 89% of games and making it nearly impossible for her opponent to break her rhythm. Anisimova struggled to even challenge her on return, giving away half her service games.
Naomi Osaka
Osaka, meanwhile, has benefited from a slightly more forgiving draw. Her toughest opponent was Liudmila Samsonova (WTA No. 16), whom she edged out in three sets (4:6, 7:6, 6:3). That match exposed some defensive frailties, with Osaka winning just 25% of return games. It’s also hard to call her current form stable — this is the first time in the past three months she’s advanced beyond the third round at any tournament.
Elina Svitolina vs Naomi Osaka Prediction
The two last met on hard court last year, with Osaka coming out on top. But this looks like the perfect opportunity for Svitolina to take her revenge. She’s in top form and on a confident march toward the title. At the very least, the semi-final looks well within her grasp.
