Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
Everton were handed one of the most favourable second-round ties in the EFL Cup, drawing Mansfield Town from League One. The visitors have little realistic chance, but the squad will at least get to step out at the new Everton Stadium.
Everton
Everton’s first competitive match at Bramley-Moore Dock was against Brighton & Hove Albion. The hosts delivered, winning 2:0. Although Jack Harrison did not score, he was named Man of the Match after providing both assists. Everton’s marquee signing is unlikely to feature here, certainly not from the start. Everton are due to play Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. In the short term, the priority is to collect league points while the schedule allows. The EFL Cup is optional at this stage.
Mansfield Town
For Mansfield Town, this is the second most significant domestic cup and one of the few avenues to make a statement. It is difficult to turn heads within League One, and now they face one of the most decorated clubs. Mansfield Town were promoted to League One the season before last. Nigel Clough, son of Brian Clough, is head coach. The squad is still adjusting to the demands of the third tier. They currently sit ninth, with two defeats after five rounds.
Everton vs Mansfield Town Prediction
Mansfield Town have not faced English Premier League opposition in the past five seasons. Even with rotation, Everton will beat Mansfield Town comfortably.
