For Ferencváros, the group-stage opener is a chance to show they can compete with established European mid-tier sides. Backed by home advantage and recent emphatic wins, the Hungarians are expected to take the initiative. Viktoria Plzeň, meanwhile, come into the game under pressure after a string of poor away results.

Ferencváros

The Hungarian champions endured a long Champions League qualifying campaign. They overcame Noah (2:1, 4:3) and Ludogorets (0:0, 3:0), but narrowly fell to Qarabağ (1:3, 3:2). Ferencváros have been aggressive going forward, scoring in 12 of their 13 matches this season. Their recent cup performance was especially striking, thrashing Sarvas Kendu (15:0).

Viktoria Plzeň

Viktoria Plzeň have struggled on the road. In the Czech league they have already lost to Sparta Prague (1:2) and Dukla Prague (0:2). In Champions League qualifying they edged past Servette (0:1, 3:1) before being outclassed by Rangers (0:3, 2:1). Defensive issues remain a problem, with only two clean sheets in 14 matches this season.

Ferencváros vs Viktoria Plzeň Prediction

The sides met in Budapest last season, with Ferencváros edging a 1:0 win. This time the hosts look stronger and more organised at home, while Viktoria Plzeň’s away form is still shaky. Expect goals in this one, with the Hungarians well placed to avoid defeat.
