Cambridge United have already made history by reaching the third round of the EFL Cup for the first time this century. Now they face the challenge of extending their run against Premier League mid-table side Fulham.
Fulham
Fulham’s last major upset in this competition came in 2022/23 when they were dumped out 0:2 away at Crawley Town in the second round. Another slip came in the FA Cup in 2018/19, losing 1:2 to Oldham Athletic at the same stage. This time they look a more stable side. In the Premier League Fulham have lost only once – a 0:2 away defeat to Chelsea – and currently sit eighth.
Cambridge United
Cambridge United are ninth in League Two following relegation from League One last season. Away from home they have held their own: two victories, including a 2:0 cup success over Bristol Rovers, plus a draw and two defeats. Importantly, Cambridge United have yet to concede more than once on their travels.
Fulham vs Cambridge United Prediction
Fulham are obvious favourites, but with an important Premier League fixture against Aston Villa looming on Sunday, the coaching staff may rotate heavily for this tie. That could give Cambridge an opportunity to frustrate their hosts and keep the contest closer than expected.
