Adam Williams presents his prediction for the UFC 308 fight.
Geoff Neal
Geoff will frequently utilise his sharp jab and step back. If Rafael launches an attack, Neal will pivot and try to catch him with a hook. The American is prepared to clinch and defend against a takedown against the cage. Using low kicks and straight punches, he can outstrike dos Anjos, and when the Brazilian's defence wanes, Geoff will attempt to catch him with a powerful cross. Defending against the takedown, Neal will aim to bring Rafael down or break the distance. Neal will maintain distance, with his powerful kicks preventing dos Anjos from targeting a leg entry. With a high guard and mobility, Geoff will avoid unnecessary damage and edge ahead on points.
Rafael dos Anjos
Rafael will throw combos and use head movement to close the distance unexpectedly. He’ll evade his opponent’s kick or absorb a couple of hits before closing the gap and launching some weighty hooks. After a low kick, dos Anjos will follow with a mighty overhand and try to seize his opponent's lead leg. Next, he will aim to swiftly take the back to transition into grappling, already controlling his opponent from behind. If Rafael fails to secure a takedown, he’ll initiate a clinch to land his signature elbows from the side. He'll also use a trip in an attempt to take his opponent down. From the top, dos Anjos will focus on control and employ elbows again.
Betting Odds
Bookmakers favour Geoff, who is expected to defend against takedowns and outstrike the Brazilian in the stand-up. The odds for a Neal victory are 7/25.
Although Rafael delivers competitive bouts, he is the older fighter and finds it increasingly challenging to maintain high-level performances, whether in the welterweight or lightweight divisions. The odds for a Rafael victory stand at 29/10.
Geoff Neal vs Rafael dos Anjos Prediction
After the bell, Rafael will strive to take Geoff down as soon as possible, but the American will stand firm and move ahead on points. The first two minutes of the second round will be in the stand-up, after which dos Anjos will attempt a takedown and, if successful, will secure the round for himself. The third round will go to Neal, as he will find a more effective way to maintain distance and outstrike the Brazilian. Nonetheless, the odds on the American seem undervalued to us, but a bet on the total over 2.5 looks much better given the expected nature of the fight. Both fighters aren't inclined to rush the action unless Geoff decides to chase a knockout, but Rafael is experienced and won't be easily caught.
