At the European Championship, both teams fell short of their goals. They even met in the group stage. This Saturday, they are set to face each other for the fifth time in just over three years. As with previous encounters, it won't be easy for Germany.
Germany
Germany's quarter-final elimination to Spain in their home European Championship was not what German fans had hoped for. If the team got past Spain, they might have gone on to become European champions, as they were one of the best teams in the tournament. Now, Germany have seen the departure of several veterans: Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, İlkay Gündoğan, and Thomas Müller. Antonio Rüdiger is also resting. This will give opportunities to those who were mostly on the bench during the Euros, with Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller being a total newcomer.
Hungary
Hungary faced Germany at Euro 2024 (0:2), and after their victory over Scotland in the third round (1:0), they had to wait to see the outcomes in other groups. Three points weren't enough to advance to the playoffs from the third spot (they lost out to Slovenia on goal difference). Still, Hungary didn't look weak in that tournament, and in every match, they fell short compared to their expected goals (2 goals with 3.65 xG). For this set of matches, Marco Rossi has called up four new players: defenders Bence Gergényi and Antal Yaakobishvili, and midfielders Gabor Vass and Tamás Nikitscher. However, the core of the team remains the experienced players from the last Euros.
Germany - Hungary Prediction
In the previous Nations League, the teams also met. Hungary came out on top over the two matches (1:1 at home, 1:0 away). At Euro 2021, Hungary also held their own (2:2), meaning Germany have only won one of their last four encounters. Germany are playing at home, but we shouldn't expect a rout, especially considering the absence of several key players who have retired. Even a narrow defeat for Hungary offers attractive odds close to 2, making it a smart pick.
