Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Nations League match.
Over the weekend, Hungary could not create an upset, as they were predictably defeated by the Netherlands (0:4). Heading into the final match against group leaders Germany, they approach with little motivation, which means Germany's formidable attack will repeatedly create opportunities—they are in exceptional form.
Hungary
Since Euro 2024, Hungary have conceded at least two goals in four of their eight matches, with top opponents consistently breaching their defence. The Netherlands generated 2.92 xG and took 11 shots on target, while the Hungarians replied with a mere 0.52 expected goals and just two shots on frame. The 3-4-3 formation has not improved their defensive reliability, and defenders Márton Dárdai and Willi Orbán have underperformed compared to their club form.
Germany
In five matches in the current Nations League campaign, Germany have achieved an individual total over 1.5 goals in four instances. Against Bosnia and Herzegovina (7:0), they were relentless in the attacking third, with Florian Wirtz being particularly impressive (2+1). The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder can catch up with Cristiano Ronaldo in the top scorer race (5+1); he already surpasses him in the goal+assist tally (3+4).
Hungary vs Germany Prediction
In the September encounter between Hungary and Germany, the intrigue was only present in the first half, as the Germans turned up the intensity and ran out 5:0 winners. While the favourites might not exert themselves fully in this upcoming leg, they are expected to score the routine 2-3 goals.
