Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the IIHF World Championship match.
The outcome of this clash will determine which side secures a spot in the top division of the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship. Hungary can avoid relegation with either a draw in regulation or even an overtime defeat. For Norway, however, only a regulation-time victory will guarantee their place in the elite tier. They bring considerable experience in handling pressure, having remained in the top division for 20 consecutive years, including surviving the final round last year.
Hungary
Hungary have suffered the heaviest defeats in this tournament. Their only win came against Kazakhstan (4:2), but all other matches ended in heavy losses, with at least six goals conceded each time. On average, they concede 6.3 goals per game while scoring just 1.3. Their standout player has been János Hari, who has contributed five points, but he cannot carry the offensive load alone. Moreover, if Switzerland defeat Kazakhstan, it could leave Hungary safe regardless of their result against Norway, potentially affecting their motivation.
Norway
Despite their low position in the group standings, Norway have shown resilience and attacking strength. In a recent fixture, they came back from 1:5 down to force overtime against the United States, eventually falling 5:6. The key player for Norway has been Stian Solberg, who has recorded six points, including a hat-trick in that match. While their defence is not without faults, it has been considerably more solid than Hungary’s, conceding 14 fewer goals overall.
Hungary vs Norway Prediction
In terms of structure and quality of play, Norway are clearly the better side. They find the net more often, give up fewer goals, and field a more balanced lineup. Norway are expected to win this one in regulation.
