Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
A classic relegation battle is set to unfold as Ipswich Town host Southampton, with both teams desperate for points. While Ipswich Town are clear favourites at home, Southampton’s defensive frailties and lack of attacking efficiency could prove costly.
Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town have struggled in their last two fixtures, suffering heavy defeats to Manchester City (0:6) and Liverpool (1:4). However, these results were expected against two of the strongest sides in the league. Despite conceding 37 goals in 21 matches, Ipswich have fared much better against teams in and around them in the table. Notable results include a 1:0 away win over Wolverhampton, a 1:1 home draw with Leicester City, and a shock victory over Chelsea without conceding.
Southampton
Southampton are in crisis mode, suffering six consecutive league defeats, conceding 17 goals in that period. Their defensive struggles have been particularly glaring, as four of those losses saw them allow three or more goals. Injury concerns are further compounding their issues: Tyler Dibling (winger) has been sidelined since the Nottingham Forest match and is expected to return only in late February. Aaron Ramsdale (first-choice goalkeeper) suffered a muscle injury before the Newcastle United match and remains unavailable. Jack Stephens (captain and centre-back) has been out since early December, weakening an already vulnerable defence.
Ipswich Town vs Southampton Prediction
Southampton also continue to struggle in front of goal, recording the worst xG difference in the league (-12.15 xGDiff). Their previous meeting with Ipswich ended 1:1, but Southampton missed three of their four big chances, while Ipswich converted efficiently (2.49–1.69 in xG). The hosts should be able to capitalise on home advantage and take all three points.
