Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Friendly International rugby match.
Ireland, at one point, held the top spot in the world rankings. Just a year ago, during the World Cup, they narrowly missed changing the tide against the All Blacks.
Ireland
Post-World Cup, Ireland have only been tested in the 2024 Six Nations Championship, which they clinched for the second year running. This time, without Johnny Sexton. During the summer, they faced another test, or rather two, against the reigning world champions, South Africa. They managed to snag one win (25:24) despite playing away, though they lost the second match (20:27). It's worth noting that not all of Europe’s top team leaders participated back then. Now, Andy Farrell has rallied the troops: scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park, centre Bundee Aki, winger Mack Hansen, and full-back Hugo Keenan, among others, aiming to bring speed and quick tries.
New Zealand
Unlike Ireland, the All Blacks have already played their autumn game. Just a week ago, they edged past England (24:22) right in front of English fans at Twickenham. Winger Mark Tele'a made a significant impact, scoring tries at both the start and finish of the game. This time, Damian McKenzie will feature from the opening minutes, not as a tactical change, but due to Beauden Barrett's injury. Scott Robertson will also be without hooker Codie Taylor, replacing him with Asafo Aumua. The bench will see appearances from George Bell and Stephen Perofeta.
Ireland vs New Zealand Prediction
When was the last time Irealand triumphed over the All Blacks? Back in July 2022 in Wellington (32:22). True, in the 2020s, they have three wins out of five test matches against them, but their largest margin has been 11 points. Conversely, New Zealand have, in one encounter, thrashed the Irish (42:19). Therefore, we believe it’s sensible to back the visitors with a handicap, anticipating they won’t lose by much.
