Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon match.
Jack Draper is once again trying to break through the second round at his home Grand Slam — something he has yet to achieve. Standing in his way is the vastly experienced Marin Cilic, the 2017 Wimbledon finalist and recent grass-court Challenger champion.
Jack Draper
Draper came through his opener confidently after Sebastian Baez retired in the third set, but it’s worth noting that in 7 of his last 10 matches, the Brit dropped at least one set — even when starting as favourite. He still lacks composure against seasoned opponents and tends to overcommit in fast-paced exchanges, which costs him rhythm. That said, Draper is very effective on grass, winning 12 of his last 15 matches on the surface over the past two years.
Marin Cilic
Cilic, by contrast, is playing mature, measured tennis and building form. He cruised past Raphael Collignon in the first round, recently lifted a grass-court title, and earlier this year defeated top-15 player Alex de Minaur in Dubai. The Croat has taken at least two sets in 18 of his last 20 Wimbledon outings. His serve remains a powerful weapon, and his experience could prove decisive in a tight contest against a still-inconsistent Draper.
Jack Draper vs Marin Cilic Prediction
Draper should ultimately prevail on grass, but it won’t come easy. Cilic is a seasoned competitor who rarely goes down in straight sets, while Draper often gives opponents a foothold. Expect the veteran to take at least a set.
