Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the US Open match.
Jannik Sinner
The ATP No. 1 player recently faced a defeat in the quarterfinals of the Montreal Masters against Andrey Rublev. He won in the Cincinnati tournament with some challenges and has encountered difficulties in New York as well. In the fourth round against Tommy Paul, Jannik managed to secure a win, but two of the three sets went to tiebreaks. Two-thirds of his unforced errors (33) occurred in the first set. If the Russian maintains consistent pressure and engages the Italian in long rallies, Sinner is likely to make even more mistakes.
Daniil Medvedev
For Daniil, each match seems to be getting easier. In the first round against Lajovic (66), he took 4 sets and 2.5 hours to clinch victory, but in the fourth round against Nuno Borges (34), he needed only 22 games and 1 hour and 51 minutes. Before the US Open, Medvedev had poor performances on the North American hard courts, exiting in the early rounds against players not in the top 30 both in Montreal and Cincinnati. However, at the US Open, he has had a favourable draw: Jannik Sinner will be his first serious hurdle on the way to a fourth final at Flushing Meadows.
Jannik Sinner - Daniil Medvedev Prediction
The Italian is almost unbeatable this year, with only 5 losses in 57 matches. One of these losses was in five sets to Medvedev, but it was on grass. In the Wimbledon quarterfinal, Daniil triumphed in five sets with two tiebreaks. Before that, Sinner had a five-match winning streak against Medvedev, all on hard courts, including a five-set match in the 2024 Australian Open final. We also expect this to be a long encounter between two of the tournament's main contenders.
