Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the US Open match.
New York hosts an all-Italian showdown. Sinner is firmly on course to defend his title, and at every Grand Slam this season he has reached the final, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Musetti has reached the US Open quarter-finals for the first time, but his hardest test lies ahead.
Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner is producing a stellar year: he has suffered only four defeats across 39 matches this season. Three of those losses were to Carlos Alcaraz and one was to Alexander Bublik. The Italian beat Alexander Bublik in the Round of 16 at the US Open, conceding just three games (6:1 6:1 6:1). Since the season before last, Jannik has won seven of his eight Grand Slam quarter-finals. In New York, en route to this stage, he has dropped only one set, winning 82% of points behind his first serve.
Lorenzo Musetti
Musetti boasts elegant technique and a fine one-handed backhand, but he still lacks consistency at the biggest events. This season, the 23-year-old Italian has lost in straight sets in 11 of 14 hard-court matches against the top 10. In New York, he has gone beyond the third round for the first time, but his opponents have all been outside the top 25 of a world ranking led by Jannik Sinner.
Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Musetti Prediction
Jannik Sinner is faster, more precise and stronger in extended rallies, which restricts Musetti’s time and options on court. Lorenzo will not take a set against such a powerful opponent.
