Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Winston-Salem match.
Although Jaume Munar is only the 12th seed in North Carolina, he goes into the quarter-finals as the tournament’s third highest-ranked player left in the draw. Marton Fucsovics is unseeded, which might suggest lower chances on paper — but the reality is more balanced.
Jaume Munar
The Spaniard trails in their head-to-head, having lost their only previous meeting (6:7, 4:6). That was six years ago, though, and both players are very different now. In the previous round, Munar was pushed to the limit by No.5 seed Lorenzo Sonego. The first two sets were tightly contested, before the Italian faded physically in the decider (4:6, 6:4, 6:1).
Marton Fucsovics
The Hungarian came through his own test in the last 16, facing the experienced Roberto Bautista Agut, seeded 14 here. Fucsovics entered as favourite and delivered, sealing victory in straight sets (6:4, 6:3) in under an hour and a half. He may be down at No.94 in the ATP rankings, but he has regularly upset higher-ranked opposition this season. At this very tournament he knocked out world No.31 and second seed Tallon Griekspoor (6:3, 4:6, 6:3).
Jaume Munar vs Marton Fucsovics Prediction
Despite the ranking edge, Munar faces a serious threat in Fucsovics, whose form and resilience against top-50 opponents stand out. The match-up looks tight, and everything points towards a drawn-out battle with little between them.
