Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon match.
So far, Benjamin Bonzi has produced the biggest upset of the tournament, knocking out world No. 11 Daniil Medvedev in the opening round. His next opponent, Australia’s Jordan Thompson, is considerably less of a challenge than the Russian, and there’s every chance the Frenchman’s winning run will continue.
Jordan Thompson
Thompson scraped past Vit Kopriva (No. 78) in five sets (3:6, 4:6, 6:3, 7:6, 6:1), but the Czech practically handed him the win — crumbling from the third set onwards. A slew of unforced errors was the real difference-maker. Even then, Thompson’s defensive game was poor: he managed to win just 13% of points on his opponent’s serve.
Benjamin Bonzi
Bonzi, by contrast, showed grit and composure under pressure, winning two sets via tiebreaks. He remained calm even against elite opposition and was notably tidy: 33 unforced errors to 38 winners, with 9 errors coming in the only set he dropped. His serving and return stats were solid — winning 75% on his own serve and 38% on return. For comparison, Medvedev’s figures were far lower at 62% and 25%.
Jordan Thompson vs Benjamin Bonzi Prediction
Bonzi’s first-round victory was no fluke. He’s clearly in excellent form and riding a wave of momentum. Against the erratic Thompson, the Frenchman should have enough to book his place in the next round.
