Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Toronto match.
The hard-court Masters in Toronto has delivered an unexpected final, as Karen Khachanov takes on Ben Shelton for the title. Both players pulled off surprising wins over tournament favourites Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, respectively, to earn their spots in the final of this prestigious ATP 1000 event. This marks Khachanov’s first appearance in a Masters final since 2018, while Ben Shelton is competing in his first-ever final at this level.
Karen Khachanov
Karen Khachanov has a strong record in tour-level finals, winning seven out of ten, including an ATP 1000 title in Paris in 2018. In Toronto, he overcame two top-50 opponents — Casper Ruud and Alex Michelsen — as well as world number three Alexander Zverev. Throughout the tournament, the Russian has been particularly effective with his first serve, landing 76% and firing 32 aces across five matches. However, none of those victories came easily — each of his last four matches extended to at least 22 games.
Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton has reached his first ATP 1000 final following convincing wins over Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz earlier in the week. Still, six of his nine matches at hard-court Masters events this season have either gone to three sets or featured more than 22.5 games. While his serve remains a major asset, his return game often lacks consistency. Against top-20 opposition, five of his six matches have been closely fought, marked by long rallies and extended games.
Karen Khachanov vs Ben Shelton Prediction
Karen Khachanov holds the edge in experience, including a previous title at this level, while this represents new ground for Ben Shelton. Given their similar styles — big-serving and a tendency for tight sets — this final is likely to be a closely contested battle that goes beyond 22 games.
