Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Australian Open match.
Daniil Medvedev typically starts strong in Grand Slam tournaments but faced unexpected challenges in the first round of the Australian Open, requiring five sets to overcome the world number 418. Learner Tien, ranked 121st, has already secured four wins in Melbourne, including qualifiers, and is currently in excellent form. For the 21-year-old American, facing a former world number one is a significant challenge, yet statistics indicate that he can compete against more experienced opponents.
Learner Tien
In the first round, Tien defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli (ranked 94th in the ATP) in a gruelling five-setter (4:6, 7:6, 6:3, 5:7, 6:4). The match lasted nearly four hours, and despite the physical demands, Learner showcased his ability to play as the dominant force. Notably, in 2024, he won 9 out of 11 matches against players over the age of 28, underscoring his capability to handle seasoned adversaries. The American has also won at least two sets in seven of his last 10 matches.
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev's tournament start was less than ideal, dropping two sets to Kasidit Samrej (6:2, 4:6, 3:6, 6:1, 6:2). Even in the first round, the Russian expended significant energy and emotion and now faces another opponent eager to prove himself against top-tier opposition. It is worth noting that Daniil has dropped at least one set in five of his last six Grand Slam matches to players ranked outside the top 100. Additionally, in seven of his last eight encounters with Americans, Medvedev has also lost at least one set.
Learner Tien vs Daniil Medvedev Prediction
While Medvedev remains the clear favourite, his game is far from flawless. Tien is likely to win at least one set through his high intensity and strong play. Given Daniil’s slow start and propensity for long matches, we are betting on Learner Tien with a handicap.
