Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
The most anticipated match of the round has been saved for last – a clash between the league leaders and the fourth-placed team. This fixture wasn’t even scheduled for the next day but two days later, highlighting its significance. The first meeting this season is still fresh in memory, particularly Leeds United’s goalkeeper’s fatal error in the 97th minute, which led to a 2:2 draw.
Leeds United
That frustrating draw did not affect Leeds’ standing at the time, as they remained fifth after nine rounds. However, they have since climbed to the top and have led the table for 10 consecutive matchdays. Their dominance is largely due to their recent form, winning three straight matches with a combined score of 13:0. The biggest demolition was a 7:0 thrashing of Cardiff City, while even a strong Watford side was comfortably beaten (4:0).
Sunderland
That dramatic draw helped Sunderland stay top of the table at the time, but those days are long gone. Since matchday 17, they have been locked in fourth place, struggling to break into the top three. Inconsistency has been their biggest issue – they have drawn three of their last six games, two of which ended 2:2. Their recent matches have been goal-heavy, with three of their last four surpassing the over 3.5 goals mark.
Leeds United vs Sunderland Prediction
Thinking back to that late mistake, it's hard to say that a Leeds win is a certainty. Instead, we see a safer bet – a double chance on Leeds combined with over 2.5 goals. After all, four of their last seven games have hit this total.
