Adam Williams presents his prediction for the English Premiership rugby match.
The 2022 champions, Leicester Tigers, are aiming for the final once again with Michael Cheika at the helm, but the reigning champions, Northampton Saints, stand in their way. This classic rivalry from the early 2010s might just regain its former intensity. Another chapter unfolds this Saturday.
Leicester Tigers
The Tigers are still dealing with the situation involving their coach Michael Cheika, who received a two-match suspension for inappropriate conduct towards an independent medical professional. Earlier in the week, Cheika commented on the incident and his suspension. The Australian believes the ban has harmed his reputation and suggested somebody does not want him in the league. Despite this, he is concerned about the impact on his club. Without him, the team comfortably defeated Newcastle Falcons away 42:10, as expected. More crucial is how the Tigers handle tougher opponents. Against runners-up Bath Rugby, they faltered due to a weak second half, conceding 15 of the 20 points in that period.
Northampton Saints
The champions tend to improve after the break, with the exception of their game against Bath Rugby, where the Saints lost both halves. In the second round against Exeter Chiefs (30:24), they expanded their lead significantly in the second half with two converted tries, and in the third round, they overcame Harlequins (33:29) with three tries, including a penalty try, despite trailing 14:22 at halftime. However, as evidenced, the Saints still struggle to secure decisive victories.
Leicester Tigers vs Northampton Saints Prediction
In their last 10 Premiership meetings, Leicester Tigers hold a slight edge with a 6:4 record, and banking on an away victory at Welford Road is risky. In Tigers' last six encounters at home, if they lost, it was never by more than five points. We'll take a similar handicap on them, but it's unlikely they'll lose.
