One of the favourites for the Europa League proper start with a home tie against underdogs, SK Brann. Everyone expects Lille to win.

That is no surprise. Lille were seeded in Pot 1 at the draw and the opponents they have drawn look manageable, even AS Roma. SK Brann are viewed as one of the softer assignments. How else to assess a last-16 participant in last season’s UEFA Champions League who now have FIFA World Cup winner Olivier Giroud in the squad? Lille are one of the two highest-scoring teams in Ligue 1, with 13 goals in five matches, and they currently sit fifth in the standings.

SK Brann

Since returning to the Eliteserien, SK Brann have arguably been the closest challengers to Bodø/Glimt. The squad have not managed to overhaul the domestic pacesetters, so they have to compete in the UEFA Europa League. Thanks in part to Bodø/Glimt, SK Brann even reached this season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers, but they fell at the first hurdle against Red Bull Salzburg, losing 1:4 at home and then drawing 1:1 away. Red Bull Salzburg are of comparable stature to Lille, a regular in the group stage of European competition, including the Champions League. Häcken and Larnaca in Europa League qualifying were much easier opponents to navigate.

The straightforward angle is a home win. We will be a touch braver and back Lille to win with a -1.5 handicap. That looks entirely realistic.
