Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
One of the sensations of this year's Champions League, Lille are on the brink of breaking into the tournament's top eight. Having concluded a challenging schedule, they now need to leverage their class to achieve success against mid-tier opponents like Sturm Graz, where individual brilliance should suffice.
Lille
Following victories over Real Madrid (1:0) and Atlético Madrid (3:1), Lille shared the points with another giant, Juventus, in an away draw (1:1). In their last round against Bologna (2:1), they were far more dangerous up front (2.16–1.45 in xG), playing on the counter (43%–57% possession). On Friday in the national league, Lille overcame another Champions League participant from France, Stade Brestois (3:1), with their star player Jonathan David contributing 2+2.
Sturm Graz
Despite the departure of manager Christian Ilzer to Hoffenheim, Sturm Graz have slightly improved their results. A win over Girona (1:0) allowed them to move away from the bottom of the group stage table, although it's worth noting that Girona have been struggling against all opponents. Moreover, in five European outings, the Austrians have scored just two goals—only Bologna have a worse attack (1).
Lille vs Sturm Graz Prediction
It is likely that Russian goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov will start again for Sturm Graz away against Lille, but his abilities might not be enough to secure a positive result. The French side have more skill, and a whole group of injured players have returned. We're backing a win for the hosts.
