Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the EFL Cup match.
Despite often being seen as inferior to the FA Cup and Premier League, the EFL Cup remains a prestigious trophy—especially when lifted at Wembley. Both Liverpool and Newcastle United will be highly motivated to claim silverware in what promises to be an intense showdown.
Liverpool
Due to the final, both teams had their Premier League fixtures from Matchweek 29 postponed. Liverpool have already played theirs, while Newcastle United still have a game to complete. Liverpool come into this crucial encounter after another significant match, albeit not a final. Their Champions League campaign ended at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, meaning their only remaining silverware hopes lie in the Premier League and the EFL Cup. This should fuel their determination at Wembley.
Newcastle United
For Newcastle United, this is the only realistic shot at silverware this season. While a win here only secures a Europa Conference League place, they won’t dismiss the chance to end their long trophy drought. However, they will be without the suspended Anthony Gordon, a key attacking outlet, which could hamper their offensive output. Newcastle edged past West Ham United in their last league outing, but top scorer Alexander Isak (22 goals) struggled to make an impact.
Liverpool vs Newcastle United Prediction
Liverpool’s quality and frustration from their Champions League elimination should translate into a strong performance. Back in February, they comfortably beat Newcastle United (2:0) at Anfield, limiting the visitors to minimal chances. Since then, Newcastle’s problems have only grown.
