Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the WTA Roland Garros match.
French player Lois Boisson has been the breakout story of Roland Garros, reaching the semi-finals as a wild card entrant. This tournament represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her to shine on home soil. However, she now faces Coco Gauff, the world number two, who continues her dominant march toward the title.
Lois Boisson
Lois Boisson is enjoying an extraordinary run, having taken down three top-25 opponents — Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula, and Mirra Andreeva. However, each of those victories was aided by lapses from her opponents: Elise Mertens failed to convert match points, Jessica Pegula led in the final set, and Mirra Andreeva held the upper hand in every set but lost the first in a tiebreak. Despite her success in Paris, Lois Boisson had a career record of just 1-3 against top-100 players prior to the tournament. Her first serve is dependable and her forehand can dictate play, but her vulnerable backhand and lack of experience are likely to prove costly against the world number two.
Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff is in outstanding form, with a 16-3 record on clay since late April, including finals appearances in Madrid and Rome. At Roland Garros, she reached the quarter-finals without dropping a set. This season, the American has given her opponents few chances, with 12 of her 16 clay-court wins coming in straight sets. Over the course of her career, she has compiled a 31-match winning streak on clay against players ranked outside the top 50.
Lois Boisson vs Coco Gauff Prediction
Lois Boisson’s run reflects the momentum of a home favourite fuelled by belief and crowd support, but that alone is unlikely to carry her past Coco Gauff. The American regularly dispatches lower-ranked opponents, commands rallies with authority, and absorbs the early momentum of underdogs. Gauff rarely loses sets, and this contest is expected to follow the same pattern.
