Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2024 Australian Open match.
Lorenzo Sonego
This is the seventh edition of the Australian Open for Lorenzo Sonego. He’s never been able to reach the third round so far. He was eliminated in the second round last season by Hubert Hurkacz, even though the Italian player was leading 2-1 (6:3, 6:7, 6:2, 3:6, 3:6).
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz easily beat Richard Gasquet in the first round, spending only two hours and a half to win (7:6, 6:1, 6:2). The Spanish player had almost the same number of the unforced errors as his opponent, but made 53 winners against 19 and 16 break points.
Lorenzo Sonego – Carlos Alcaraz prediction
Sonego beat Alcaraz almost three years ago in Cincinnati (6:3, 7:6). However, the Spanish player wasn’t that good on hard back then. Alcaraz has won 55 games on hard since that moment. Sonego has had a negative balance of wins and defeats on this surface in the last 3 seasons. Sonego had 11 games against the opponents from the top 10 last year, winning only two of them.
Alcaraz is so good to rely on the strong first serve of Sonego. I believe the favourite is going to win.
