Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Madrid match.
Neither Lorenzo Sonego nor Miomir Kecmanovic is among the leading contenders for the title in Madrid. However, this tournament presents an opportunity for Miomir Kecmanovic to build some momentum ahead of more competitive fixtures, while for Lorenzo Sonego, it’s a chance to halt a troubling run of poor form.
Lorenzo Sonego
Since a promising showing at the Australian Open, Sonego has seen a significant dip in performance. He has been eliminated in the opening round in five of his last seven tournaments and has lost six of his last seven matches overall. That includes two early defeats on clay—both matches in which he entered as the favourite: a 2:6, 7:5, 4:6 loss to Vit Kopriva and a 4:6, 6:1, 2:6 defeat to Pedro Martínez Portero. Across those two matches, he recorded 87 unforced errors and consistently struggled to maintain rhythm during rallies.
Miomir Kecmanovic
Kecmanovic is also going through a relatively modest spell, but his performances have shown more consistency than those of Lorenzo Sonego. The Serbian already has a clay-court win under his belt this season, edging past Marcos Giron in a tight three-set contest (6:2, 6:7, 7:6). Of note is his serving reliability—winning at least 66% of points on his first serve and over 50% on his second serve across his last five matches. On clay, their head-to-head record is level at 2-2, though Kecmanovic came out on top in their most recent encounter in Rio.
Lorenzo Sonego vs Miomir Kecmanovic Prediction
Neither player comes into the match in peak form, but Miomir Kecmanovic appears more stable under current conditions. Lorenzo Sonego is struggling with concentration, commits unforced errors at a high rate, and cannot sustain momentum. The Serbian looks more composed in rallies and is well placed to exploit these weaknesses.
