Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English League One match.
Luton Town
Following relegation from the Championship, Luton Town are rebuilding under Matt Bloomfield. Their start has been patchy: a narrow League Cup defeat to Coventry City and a 1:2 slip against Bradford City. In League One, though, Luton have six points from three rounds and sit ninth. Their main strength lies at Kenilworth Road, where they have lost just once in their last nine outings and currently boast a run of three consecutive clean sheets. Last season they even took points off Leeds United, who went on to win promotion.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic, who were fighting for survival last season, have shifted towards a more attacking style. In their first three league matches they have two wins and one defeat, including a convincing 2:0 against Peterborough, plus a Cup victory over Notts County. Wigan sit eighth, just outside the play-off zone. Their away record is a strength — only one defeat in their last eight trips. Still, this season’s league campaign has already brought a setback on the road with a 0:2 loss to Leyton Orient.
Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic Prediction
Luton Town are solid at home and can keep things tight, but Wigan Athletic’s progress in attack is clear to see. Head-to-head clashes in recent years have been evenly matched without a clear favourite. This game is likely to be cautious, with Luton controlling possession but Wigan always dangerous on the counter. In six of their last seven away matches Wigan Athletic have found the net, and with the need to bounce back from the defeat to Leyton Orient, they should create their chances here.
