Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the FIFA Club World Cup match.
Ahead of the final round of the Club World Cup group stage, both Mamelodi Sundowns and Fluminense remain in contention for a place in the knockout round. A draw will be enough for Fluminense, while Mamelodi Sundowns must win to progress.
Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns entered the tournament in excellent form and have already demonstrated their quality. A 1:0 victory over Ulsan Hyundai and a strong attacking display in a narrow 4:3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund point to a well-balanced squad combining solid defensive structure with an effective attack. They have kept a clean sheet in 13 of their last 20 matches. Offensively, the South Africans have also impressed, scoring in each of their past 11 fixtures. Notably, in the match against Borussia Dortmund, Mamelodi Sundowns outperformed their opponents in terms of xG (2.74–1.72).
Fluminense
Fluminense, on the other hand, have experienced contrasting performances in their two group matches: a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund followed by a high-scoring 4:2 win over Ulsan Hyundai. Despite registering 25 shots and controlling 70% of possession against the South Korean team, the Brazilians continue to show vulnerability at the back. Fluminense conceded twice despite 0.63 xGA. Furthermore, they have made at least one defensive error leading to a goal in seven of their last eleven fixtures.
Mamelodi Sundowns vs Fluminense Prediction
Mamelodi Sundowns have produced a solid showing in this tournament and held their own against a strong Borussia Dortmund squad, even after conceding three first-half goals. The squad managed to bring suspense back into the contest. Fluminense found their attacking rhythm in the second round, netting four goals against Ulsan Hyundai, but their ongoing defensive issues could be exploited. Given the current form and motivation, Mamelodi Sundowns look capable of earning at least one point.
