Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
This match is not only the highlight of the round but could also determine the future trajectory of these clubs. Manchester City and Chelsea are separated by just two points: the London side currently sit in the fourth Champions League spot, while Manchester City trail in fifth, but this could all change after their encounter.
Manchester City
Manchester City recently climbed to this fifth position following a dominant 6:0 victory over Ipswich Town away from home. In that match, none of the club's three new signings — defenders Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov, and forward Omar Marmoush — could play, as they were acquired after the 19th. They were also absent in the match against Paris Saint-Germain, where Manchester City fell short (2:4). Against Chelsea, expect a scoreline that’s closer to the Paris result rather than the Ipswich one.
Chelsea
Chelsea, on the other hand, had a midweek break. They triumphed over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday (3:1), offering a sigh of relief after five Premier League games without a win (three draws, two losses). Unlike their Manchester counterparts, Chelsea have not made any purchases in this January transfer window. While their squad remains large, the loss of key centre-backs Benoît Badiashile and Wesley Fofana back in December has impacted their recent performances. Additionally, following a collision in the match against Wolverhampton, the appearance of key midfielder Enzo Fernández is in doubt.
Manchester City vs Chelsea Prediction
For Manchester City, the fresh absence is primarily Nathan Aké, but he is the third choice in central defence. Fortunately for Pep Guardiola, as the Dutchman was sidelined, Rúben Dias returned, and now Abdukodir Khusanov is also an option. Overall, Chelsea face more defensive issues, which the hosts are likely to exploit and secure a victory.
