Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Europa League match.
Over the weekend, Manchester United suffered their first defeat of 2025, and the clash with Rangers at Old Trafford is expected to be their response to these setbacks. Their supporters have shifted their hopes from securing European competition spots through the Premier League to focusing on the Europa League.
Manchester United
In January, Manchester United battled away with Liverpool (2:2) and overcame Arsenal (2:1 after a penalty shootout), also defeating Southampton (3:1). Against Brighton (1:3), despite not falling short in attack (1.41–1.98 in xG and 10–6 in shots), critical defensive errors led to their downfall. In the Europa League, Manchester United enjoyed a pleasing run of three consecutive victories, securing a top-eight place, which they aim to maintain till the end of the group stage.
Rangers
Ahead of the seventh round, Rangers sit just behind Manchester United in the table, having scored one more goal (13 against 12). After the November international break, the Scottish side showcased resilience in the Europa League: a thumping victory over Nice (4:1) and a draw with Tottenham Hotspur (1:1) brought the Glasgow team 3.79 xG. Since January 12, they have achieved three consecutive wins with a combined score of 11:1.
Manchester United vs Rangers Prediction
Manchester United might benefit from Rangers' poor away form (no victories in their last five encounters); however, this alone does not guarantee an easy win for them. Opting for a total over could be wiser, as both teams are likely to create plenty of scoring opportunities.
