Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Roland Garros match.
Marton Fucsovics has not advanced past the second round at Roland Garros since 2021. Once again, the Hungarian is on the verge of early elimination, this time facing a stern challenge from 12th seed Tommy Paul. For the American, this match offers a chance to confirm the solid form he showed in Rome and to avoid the kind of drawn-out battle he had in the opening round.
Marton Fucsovics
In his first match, Marton Fucsovics recorded a straightforward win over Tristan Schoolkate (6:4, 6:2, 6:2), though the level of opposition was far from top-tier. A more accurate reflection of his current form comes from his recent results on clay: defeats to Borna Gojo, Carlos Taberner, and Alexander Shevchenko, as well as a heavy loss to Novak Djokovic just last week, in which he managed to win only four games. In fact, in five of his last six appearances on clay, the Hungarian has failed to win more than one match.
Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul, in contrast, has delivered consistent results this season and arrived in Paris as a seeded player. He started slowly in his opener against Elmer Moller, losing the first set in a tiebreak, but then took full control (6:7, 6:2, 6:3, 6:1). This kind of match dynamic is not unusual for him—he has dropped at least one set or been taken to extended sets in seven of his eight clay-court wins this season. Still, he has consistently come through, both physically and tactically. Notably, the American impressed at the Rome Masters, reaching the semi-finals with victories over Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz.
Marton Fucsovics vs Tommy Paul Prediction
Given his recent form and the strength of his opposition, Tommy Paul enters this match as the firm favourite. Although he and Marton Fucsovics have met once before—in 2016, when the Hungarian suffered a heavy defeat (0:6, 7:5, 4:6)—the gap between the two has only grown wider since then.
