Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Washington match.
An all-Italian clash in the round of 32 at the ATP Washington tournament will mark the first-ever meeting between Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Sonego. The match will be played on outdoor hard courts—a surface on which both players are well-versed, though the more experienced Sonego appears more comfortable.
Matteo Arnaldi
Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the next round, but his win over Daniel Altmaier was far from straightforward—he had to fend off two break points in the final set before sealing a 4:6, 6:2, 7:6 victory. So far this season, Arnaldi has won 7 out of 13 matches on hard courts. Against top-tier opposition in 2025, he has lost four of six contests.
Lorenzo Sonego
Lorenzo Sonego brings a blend of adaptability and experience. Earlier this season, he reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, winning four of five matches on hard courts. He is at ease on American soil—last year, Sonego captured the title in Winston-Salem. However, all 13 of his outdoor hard court matches this season have been physically demanding, featuring either split sets or tiebreaks.
Matteo Arnaldi vs Lorenzo Sonego Prediction
Matteo Arnaldi has the ability to challenge and may well take a set. A close encounter is expected, likely to feature at least 24 games. Nonetheless, Lorenzo Sonego's track record and composure on hard courts make him the more likely to advance.
