Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the international friendly match.
Seventy-five years after their first meeting at the 1950 FIFA World Cup, Mexico and Switzerland are set to meet again in a friendly in Salt Lake City. On that occasion, Switzerland claimed victory — and this time, they appear more balanced and determined to maintain defensive discipline, even in a non-competitive fixture.
Mexico
As co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexico are exempt from qualification. Nonetheless, they remain actively engaged in a series of carefully selected friendlies. In January, the squad faced Internacional (2:0) and River Plate (0:2), and in March they lifted the CONCACAF Nations League trophy. In that tournament, Raúl Jiménez of Fulham played a pivotal role, scoring twice in the final against Panama (2:1), despite both teams posting similar expected goals statistics (1.61–1.28 in xG).
Switzerland
A generational shift has influenced recent performances of Switzerland, resulting in their relegation from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League last autumn. In March friendlies against Northern Ireland (1:1) and Luxembourg (3:1), the squad dominated possession. Ruben Vargas (2+0) and Breel Embolo (1+1) were key figures in the victory. Even without Yann Sommer, Switzerland can rely on one of the world’s most valuable goalkeepers in Gregor Kobel (valued at €40 million), while Dan Ndoye of Bologna is emerging as a focal point in attack.
Mexico vs Switzerland Prediction
Bookmakers see no clear favourite in this fixture between Mexico and Switzerland. However, we lean towards Switzerland, whose sharpness and competitive depth make them the more convincing pick.
