A pivotal fixture for both sides and among the most appealing for neutrals. Top of the Championship, Middlesbrough host third-placed Stoke City. Both clubs are in the upper reaches of the standings, but on Matchday 7 neither side managed a win.
Middlesbrough
This is not an excuse but context for the 1:1 draw with Southampton, who also compete for a place in the English Premier League. Across the last four matchdays, Middlesbrough have had a demanding run: a 1:0 win against Sheffield United, a 1:1 draw with West Bromwich Albion, with whom the team fought hard for the play-offs last spring, and an important 2:2 away draw at Preston North End.
Stoke City
Stoke City have had setbacks yet sit third in the standings. That position is shaped by a 1:1 home draw with Norwich City and a single goal by Queens Park Rangers that denied the team even a point. However, the influence of an experienced manager is already evident at the club; in the 2024/25 campaign the team have barely stayed afloat, but after a full pre-season results and confidence have started to grow.

However, Middlesbrough are top for a reason. They finished in the top five last season, and with three clear leaders moving up to the English Premier League they now have much more freedom. Despite resistance from Stoke City, the hosts should win.
