Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the ATP Wimbledon qualifying match.
In the semi-finals of the Wimbledon qualifying tournament, the experienced Mikhail Kukushkin faces August Holmgren. The Kazakh is rightly regarded as the favourite, thanks to his extensive grass-court experience, while August Holmgren is only beginning to adapt to this surface.
Mikhail Kukushkin
Throughout his career, Mikhail Kukushkin has played 67 matches on grass, showing a strong understanding of the faster courts. Since the start of 2023, he has posted 7 wins from 13 appearances on grass. In the opening round of Wimbledon qualifying, Kukushkin comfortably overcame a solid opponent, securing a win. He delivered a 70% first-serve percentage, won 78% of those points, and committed only one double fault.
August Holmgren
August Holmgren entered the season with no previous experience on grass. The 2025 campaign has been disappointing for him, with just 7 wins in 21 matches. In his opening qualifying match, Holmgren beat his opponent (No. 376), but required three sets to do so. Although August defeated Mikhail Kukushkin on hard court last season, the circumstances have changed significantly since then. Kukushkin is now well-acclimated to the surface, while August has just two wins in his last nine outings.
Mikhail Kukushkin vs August Holmgren Prediction
Given Mikhail Kukushkin’s experience on grass, his strong performance in the opening round, and August Holmgren’s current struggles, the Kazakh is expected to progress with relative ease.
